Kratom Effects

Kratom has a strong effect on your anxiety, mood and energy levels. It lowers your anxiety level, while the feeling has been described as happy, strong, and active, with a strong desire to do work. The mind is described as calm. Thai workers use it to get through a hard day of work. Effects come on within five to ten minutes after use, and can last for several hours.

Most people describe the effects as stimulating and euphoric at lower doses, becoming sedative at higher doses. This is probably explained by the fact that mitragynine stimulates the delta opioid receptors when used in small quantities, but tends to increasingly stimulate mu opioid receptors when used in larger quantities. These are the same receptors that are stimulated when using opiate drugs.

Although the most important alkaloids are related to psychedelic substances, there appears to be no psychedelic activity. The dominant effects seem to be similar to opiate drugs, and include analgesia and cough suppression, but effects are also described as euphoric and stimulating. These effects are roughly comparable in strength to codeine.

There are some sources that suggest Kratom (like opiates) stimulates desire in women and reduces erectile problems in men. This is most likely explained by the effect of mitragynine on one’s anxiety levels. Other effects of mitragynine are a reduction in smooth muscle tone, local anesthesia, and central nervous system depression.

Acute possible negative effects include dry mouth, increased urination, loss of appetite, and constipation. Unlike opiates, mitragynine does not cause nausea or vomiting in most cases. Heavy use can result in a prolonged sleep. Read more about the effects of and warnings for the use of kratom on the warnings page.

Difference between kratom strains

There are several types of kratom available, and new strains seem to appear on the market frequently. However, in reality these are often commercial Thai or Malaysian types, sold under a different name.

Responsible for the difference in effects are genetic differences, causing a change in indole and alkaloid formation.

Bali: Users report that Bali kratom becomes narcotic and very relaxating at higher doses, while it allows for a more stimulating effect when low doses are ingested.

Thai: Thai kratom effects are said to be the longest lasting, and most sedating of all kratom strains. Nowadays commercial available Thai kratom is grown in countries other than Thailand, as it was banned some years ago. A normal dose of Thai kratom contains 3-5 grams.

Malaysia: Malaysian kratom is reported to be almost identical to kratom originating from Bali.

Maeng Da: (Thai) Maeng Da kratom is translated as ‘pimp grade’ kratom and originates from Thailand. It is the strongest kratom strain available today. According to users, Maeng Da is less euphorizing than other strains, but it is praised for its energizing effects. Critics say it is more jittery than other Premium Thai strains, and argue it is not as long lasting. The active dose is 1-2 grams. High quality Maeng Da is very green in color.

ya, ive been taking kratom for a long time and i gotta say, i love thai kratom. I tried maeng da and it didnt give me the euphoria/energy i wanted... BUT i did try a gram for the Maeng Da 40x powder and it is probably the best ive had is alot more expensive however. Have a great day!
I'm at a point where less is better, and the Thai kratom powder 3 times a day, helps me with pain better than pill form opiates. I get a bit jittery if I use any more than this. My first dose of the day is a well rounded teaspoon, mixed with a small amount of hot water, then a bit less for my next 2 doses. I don't use any before sleep, because I feel it's just a waste, and I sleep through the pain just fine until my first morning dose. Until I find something better for pain, depression, & anxiety, I see no reason to stop using kratom. Use responsibly...
I recently discovered Kratom as I was looking for an alternative to pain killers. I had 12 procedures done on my kidney and they were just feeding me lortabs but if I ran out and would have to wait for my refill I found myself in deep trouble trying to deal with the pain (and possibly the withdrawal effect from taking lortabs for months at a time then just stopping-- might I add I was taking the meds as prescribed by my dr). I got tired of the pain pill game and decided I needed an alternative and came across Kratom maeng da and after near 10 months of being fed pain pills this worked AMAZING and within minutes I went from doubled over in pain to up and at it doing laundry etc. ((no joke!!)) I also tried Bali strand but found it to give me an awkward sedative feeling. Maeng da has helped me get off pain pills and helped me regain my life back!
I just ordered some Thai kratom, I'm really hoping for and opiate/energy like effect that I get from pills...I don't want to take them anymore so I thought I'd try this. Wish me luck.
I started experimenting with different strains when my supplier ran out of bali, Bali gives me a nice euphoria, It makes me very pleasant, The thai made me want to work. Both help reduce my pain. I may be using more of the thai for housework day.
i know someone who is using captain kratom capsules . could they be addicting. also could it cause mood swings . or be used as if it were a drug (vicodin)
I love kratom it has been a life saver.I was prescribed perscription opiotes for years and when I decided to stop the detox was so severe but when I tried Kratom (of any strain) all of the withdrawal symptoms immediatly went away along with my pain ,also got my energy back.I would recommend this to anyone as an opiate alternative!
Kratom is always a fascinating topic to talk about, especially because of its diversity. Unlike other ethno botanicals of its kind, its effects are different depending on its strain, it changes its effects depending upon the amount you ingest. Truly, this mysterious plant is covered with a veil of mystery, and among many questions about kratom comes about the difference of its strains. Let us answer that question here.
I just discovered Captain Kratom after 12 years of sick of the doctor sick of drugs period. So, well, it is great/ no withdrawl symptoms, resting OK....thank goodness there is life after opiates
I feel like I must be doing something wrong. I have tried 3 different strands of kratom and nothing seems to be helping me with my pain. I have only tried capsules, would the powder be a better option for me? I need something that won't make me very sedated so I tried a Thai strain, I think that it over stimulated me. Can someone help me?
red vein is more sedative, green vein is more stimulating
My story is very similar, but I tried Suboxen and couldn't stand the taste and vomiting. Kratom took care of the wd's and gave me back my energy.
No you idiot. Everything is a drug you twat. THe food you eat, that effect your "love" gives you. It can be used like vicodin as it produces pain killing effects. Abusing kratom is a little hard to do because taking too much WILL cause nausea and vomiting.
I noticed quite a few comments about certian strains lacking the energy effect .I use white vein Indonesian Kratom for energy....It works wonderfully , I would even say better than most stimulants prescribed by a doctor. Borneo red Kratom feels just like narcotics and really helps with the pain. We order ours right online. Also The powder works the best not to mention you get sooo much more for your money...I know its quite yucky but there are ways to make the powder more tolerable.
I have tried many different strains just because I can, and to find the absolute best one that fits me. I have noticed that Bali tends to make me slight nauseous regardless of the dose, but the stronger, more sedating Red Veins such as Sumatran, Kali, Thai, and Borneo provide a long lasting sedation affect without any kind of nausea. Talk about odd. I used to do a lot of pills back in the day, mostly Norcos, and those would almost always make me nauseous. So why is it that Bali seems to have that same affect on me, while the much stronger, sedating, Red strains do not? I'd welcome some input. :)
