FAQ
What is kratom ?
Kratom is the common name for the plant Mitragyna speciosa
Korthals, that originates from South-East Asia. In Thailand the leaves of this
tree-like plant have been used for many centuries for their medicinal and psychoactive
qualities, which are comparable to that of opiate-based drugs. Thai workers
use the leaves as a stimulant that activates mind and body. It is also used
to help people get rid of an opium addiction. In recent times the use of kratom
as a recreational drug has also gained popularity in the West.
What are the effects of kratom ?
The effects of kratom have been described as similar to opiate-based drugs,
but milder. The effects are stimulant and euphoric with a small dose, becoming
calming and narcotic at higher doses. The effects come on after 5 to 10 minutes
and can last several hours.
What is the difference between different types of kratom ?
There are several different types of kratom on the market: leaves, powder and
extract. Dried leaves are the most common form of kratom. Kratom powder usually
consists of powdered leaves and is a bit stronger. Extract is a sticky substance
that is left after lengthy boiling and straining of leaves and is stronger than
plain leaves.
The quality of the leaves is the most important factor in the strength of kratom.
On the internet you will find what is called 'commercial leaves', meaning that
these are a blend of leaves of different quality. These are quite good to make
your own extract. You will also find selected, high quality leaves or powder.
These are usually more expensive, but you will need less.
How do I use kratom ?
Kratom can be chewed, smoked or made as tea. This last method is the most appetizing.
Put 5-10 grams of crushed leaves in hot water and let it infuse for a while.
Add tea and sugar or honey, if you wish. When using extract, take half of the
amounts. It is also possible to make your own extract from leaves that can be
stored for later use. Click here for a recipe.
How much should I use ?
The amount of kratom you need for a trip depends very much on the strength of
the kratom used. For inexperienced users 5-10 grams of leaves should be enough,
or half those amounts when using extract. More experienced users will feel the
need to increase the dosage after a while.
Is kratom dangerous or addictive ?
Kratom is not dangerous or addictive, when used sensibly. In Thailand, there
are some known cases of kratom addiction, but this was with people who used
large amounts on a daily basis for a longer period. The health and addiction
risks are very small, when you use kratom occasionally as a recreational drug.
Nevertheless, kratom, like any other drug, is not completely without risk. Please
read the warnings and guidelines on this site before
using kratom.
Is kratom legal ?
To our knowledge kratom is comletely legal in Europe and in the USA. Only a
small number of countries have prohibited kratom: Australia, Thailand, Cambodia,
Birma, Malaysia and Vietnam.
